Shoreditch fire-resistant glazing adds character to London Met’s Holloway Road accommodation

London Metropolitan University’s Holloway Road accommodation was upgraded as part of a wider refurbishment of student spaces across the campus. Working with Weston Williamson + Partners and Tide Construction, Optima supplied Technishield fire-resistant doors and screens in Shoreditch Edition, bringing fire-resistant performance into the ground-floor accommodation areas while giving the interiors a more contemporary architectural character.

Fire resistance for student accommodation

The refurbishment required fire-resistant glazed doors and screens within the student accommodation areas. Technishield was specified to provide the required fire-resistant performance while allowing the spaces to remain open, visible and connected.

Depending on the specified configuration, the doors and screens can provide 30/30 or 60/60 integrity and insulation. This allowed the project team to meet the practical requirements of the building while avoiding the heavier appearance of solid fire-resistant separation.

Shoreditch detailing across the ground floor

The Shoreditch Edition detailing gives the fire-resistant glazing a more distinctive architectural role within the ground-floor spaces. The applied bars create a strong grid across the doors and screens, giving the accommodation a more contemporary, urban character.

This was important in a student environment where shared areas need to feel robust, modern and carefully designed. Rather than treating fire-resistant glazing as a purely technical requirement, the system becomes part of the visual identity of the fit-out.

Safety and style in the same system

The project shows how fire-resistant performance can be integrated into a more expressive interior design. The Technishield range allowed the accommodation to achieve the required level of protection, while the Shoreditch Edition treatment gave the screens and doors a clear design purpose.

Across the refurbished spaces, the result is a practical and visually confident installation: fire-resistant glazing that supports the building’s requirements while adding rhythm, transparency and character to London Metropolitan University’s student accommodation.
