Shoreditch Edition fire-resistant glazing shapes Alfreton Road’s student amenity spaces

Alfreton Road Student Accommodation in Nottingham uses dark Shoreditch Edition detailing, warm timber finishes and open shared spaces to create a more characterful residential environment for students. Across the lower ground, ground and first floors, Optima supplied Technishield fire-resistant screens and doorsets in Shoreditch Edition, bringing EI60 fire resistance and 1.5kN line loading into key public areas without losing the openness of the communal spaces.

Fire-resistant glazing within shared student spaces

The project required fire-resistant screens and doorsets across public areas of the accommodation, including the lower ground, ground and first floors. Technishield EI60 was specified to provide the required fire resistance while allowing the communal areas to remain visually connected.

This was particularly important in spaces such as the lounge, kitchen, study and gym areas, where openness and visibility contribute to the overall resident experience. The glazing introduces protection where required, but avoids the heavier feel of solid separation.

Shoreditch Edition with a residential character

All of the Technishield screens and doorsets were delivered in Shoreditch Edition, giving the fire-resistant package a consistent architectural language throughout the project. The dark applied framework adds rhythm across the elevations and sits naturally against the black ceilings, exposed services and warm timber finishes.

Rather than reading as purely technical elements, the fire-resistant screens become part of the interior character. The Shoreditch detailing gives the accommodation a more urban, hospitality-influenced feel, helping the shared areas feel designed, social and carefully composed.

Performance for active public areas

The glazing package was also specified for 1.5kN line loading in public space, reflecting the demands of a busy student accommodation environment. This allowed the screens to be used confidently in shared areas where circulation, social use and day-to-day movement place higher requirements on the internal glazing.

Across the scheme, the combination of EI60 fire resistance, public-space line loading and Shoreditch Edition detailing gives Alfreton Road a practical but distinctive interior solution. The result is a student environment where safety, durability and architectural character are carried through the same glazed system.
