Edinburgh’s Old and New Towns shape KPMG’s new workplace
KPMG’s Edinburgh headquarters brings 300 employees together within a workplace designed around the character of the city itself. Developed by Michael Laird Architects and delivered by GHI in two phases, the interior takes cues from the contrast between Edinburgh’s medieval Old Town and the ordered geometry of the New Town.
The two workplace wings interpret these distinct urban conditions through colour, pattern and planning, while a central reception connects them across the floorplate. Optima supplied glazed partitions and doors to the reception, working areas, client suites and café, combining clear double glazing with the graphic black framework of the Shoreditch Edition.
The completed fit-out achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating and was shortlisted in the Fit-Out and Interiors category of the 2020 AJ Specification Awards.
A reception between two sides of the city
Positioned at the centre of the plan, the reception creates a visual and spatial connection between the two workplace wings. Shoreditch Edition Elite Aero double pocket sliding doors form a broad glazed divide between this shared arrival space and the open working areas beyond. When open, the doors retract into concealed pockets to create a more direct relationship between the spaces; when closed, they reinstate the boundary without introducing the visual weight of a solid wall.
The black framework gives the glazed elevation a stronger graphic presence against the lighter timber finishes of the reception. Integrated privacy glass allows the transparency of the doors to be changed when required, enabling the space to respond to different levels of visibility and use.
From the Old Town to the New Town
The workplace wings draw on the contrasting form and atmosphere of Edinburgh’s historic centre. The South Wing references the irregular grain of the Old Town, while the North Wing takes its cue from the rhythm and order of the New Town. Natural timber provides continuity between the two, set against earthy greens, brighter red tones and more expressive details.
Revolution 54 double-glazed partitioning forms meeting rooms within these working areas, providing acoustic separation while allowing daylight to remain present within the enclosed spaces. The restrained framing sits comfortably within the wider palette, allowing the changes in colour, pattern and furniture to define the character of each wing.
Extending the detail into the café and client suites
Revolution 54 Shoreditch Edition partitioning was introduced around the communal café, where its black applied framework aligns with the lighting and metalwork used across the space. The glazing helps define the café as a distinct social setting while providing acoustic separation from the adjacent working areas.
Edge Symmetry double-glazed doors and timber doors were used across the café, client suites and meeting rooms. The Edge Symmetry system is available with acoustic performance of up to Rw41dB, depending on the tested configuration. At the café entrance, a bespoke double-leaf arrangement allows one leaf to remain open while the other is closed, helping the entrance adapt to different patterns of movement through the day.

“Our objective was to create a space that enhances our client interactions and helps us to collaborate, innovate and excel.”
The completed workplace translates that ambition into a clear architectural response, combining collaborative, client-facing and focused settings within an interior shaped by the character of Edinburgh. The glazing helps maintain continuity between these spaces while providing the privacy and acoustic separation required for day-to-day work.
